A Happy Chance

People often ask me why I chose the name Serendipity for my business. Was it from the movie? Did I name it after the famous Serendipity 3 ice cream parlor in New York? Both great guesses, but neither is correct. I actually got the name from a reading textbook I had in the 5th grade! I remember how enchanted I was when the teacher passed out the shiny new books and I heard the word Serendipity for the first time. It seemed so whimsical, melodious, and happy. One definition for the word, "a happy chance" perfectly described what I wished to achieve for my little shop, and now my booth at the antique mall: a happy place where fortunate discoveries are made.
On a whim, I decided to do a search for the reader on amazon.com, and there it was! Only $5.99, and eligible for free shipping. I quickly placed my order, and the book arrived on my doorstop yesterday afternoon.

So many books like this old textbook end up in landfills, but I am a great believer in upcyling them into something useful and beautiful. I'm going to use this special gem for an art journal and I can't wait to see what happens by a happy chance in its pages! Every Sunday I'll share a page or two here on my blog, so tune in next week to see what I do with the covers!

  2. Hi. I've been looking all over for this book! I, too, had it as a kid. The Amazon link does not provide any images of it. Is it the same book?

  3. I had Serendipity as my reader, too! That was in the '70s. I was just thinking about this word and the first time I ever heard it, and was in connection with the textbook. I could almost visualize the cover after, what, over 35 years. Thanks for posting a photo of the book!
